Australian Native Orchid & Bonsai Show 2011
10 November 2011
The Sapphire Coast Orchid Club’s Australian Native Orchid and Bonsai show, held on the 4th & 5th November at Twyford Hall, presented a wonderful opportunity to see the dainty Sarcochilus Orchids which are the feature of the Show. They were complimented by a variety of exotic orchids, and an impressive display of Bosai by renowned grower David Hof. David was on hand throughout the show to explain the art of growing Bonsai.
Grand Champion Sarcanthinae Orchid and winner of the Bev & George Parker Perpetual Trophy was Sarc Heidi x Sarc Jewell, superbly grown and presented by Shirley Bedingfield of Merimbula. The plant carried 12 racemes of glistening white flowers with red centres, and attracted much admiration. This orchid was also awarded Champion Sarcanthinae Hybrid and Champion Sarcanthinae Specimen. Shirley also took out the pointscore for the show for the third year running.
The Best Sarcanthinae Species orchid was presented to Susie Butler from Merimbula. Her Sarc hartmannii ‘George’ carried a single raceme of perfectly formed, glistening white flowers.
John Stafford and Tracy Ainsworth from Kalaru won Champion Any Other Orchid with their beautifully flowered Den. pierardii. This plant carried 8 cascading racemes of pink and white flowers making a very eye-catching display.
Jeff Knox from Merimbula won Best Novice with his very well presented Sarc Cherie Snow.
The Sapphire Coast Orchid Club would like to thank our major sponsor, South East Fibre Exports, for their very generous support of our show. Thank you also to all exhibitors and helpers who made this show a success.
