Australian Native Orchid Show Results
07 November 2013
The Sapphire Coast Orchid Club’s Australian Native Orchid and Bonsai show was held on the 1st and 2nd November at Twyford Hall, Merimbula. This show is dedicated to the dainty Sarcochilus Orchids which are rarely seen at the regular orchid shows. They were complimented by a variety of exotic orchids, and an impressive display of Bosai by renowned grower David Hof. David was on hand throughout the show to explain the art of growing Bonsai.
Grand Champion Sarcanthinae Orchid was Sarc Heidi x Jewel 'Dungog', grown by Shirley Bedingfield of Merimbula. The plant carried numerous racemes of shapely, crysteline white flowers with a pink centre. This orchid was also awarded Champion Sarcanthinae Hybrid.
Shirley’s beautiful white Sarc hartmannii 'George' is no stranger to our showbench, and again won Champion Sarcanthinae Species. As winner of the overall pointscore, Shirley also won the Bev & George Parker Perpetual Trophy. Congratulations Shirley and well done.
Champion Sarcanthinae Specimen was awarded to John and Irene Stubbs from Brogo, for their very well flowered white and pink Sarc Fitzhart Cinnamon x Susan Surprise. Bob and Muriel Bell from Eden won Champion Any Other Orchid for their softcane Dendrobium Halarome 'Spring Susi'.
Michael Wood from Kalaru won Champion Novice with his very well presented Australian native Cymbidium suave.
Whilst not in the schedule, Barbara Jones’ imaginative orchid arrangement of a boat on the sea created a good deal of interest.
The Sapphire Coast Orchid Club would like to especially thank the Pambula and District Community Bank for their generous support of our show. Thank you also to all exhibitors and helpers who made this show a success.
